This easy recipe for gingerbread men is great for baking with children, and it makes
350g/12oz Plain flour, plus extra for rolling out
1tsp bicarbonate of soda
2tsp ground ginger
1tsp ground cinnamon
125g/41/2 oz butter
175g/6oz light soft brown sugar
1 free range egg
4tbsp golden syrup
Writing icing (optional)
Cake decorations (optional)
Sift together flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger and cinnamon and pour into the bowl. Add the butter and blend until the mix looks like breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar
Lightly beat the egg and golden syrup together, add it to the rest of the ingredients and mix until mixture clumps together. Once it forms a dough, take it out of the bowl and knead until smooth.
Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/Gas mark 4. Line 2 baking trays with greaseproof paper.
Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface - 0.5cm thickness. Using cutters, cut out Gingerbread men / shapes and place on a baking tray, leaving a gap between them.
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until lightly golden brown. Leave on the tray for 10 minutes and then move to a wire rack to finish cooling. When cooled the children can decorate using the icing pens and cake decorations
N.B: Please ensure the children to do all of the measuring out and the rolling out etc. It is really important that the children do the majority of the work..
